Whether you’re single or taken, you’ve heard this classic piece of dating advice: take things slowly or you risk scaring him away. Do you follow this in your own romantic life? Or do you think it’s outdated and detrimental to relationship romance?

Of course, you don’t want to dive in head first and proclaim your love for someone on a first date, but if you take things too slow, you risk squashing the romance altogether.

As Redondo Beach matchmakers with 30 years in the Los Angeles dating and matchmaking industry, we know the importance of approaching your new relationship at the perfect pace. Find out why taking things too slow can actually hinder your chances of finding real and lasting love.

1. If you’re not seeing each other often, you can’t connect and get close.

One of the most obvious reasons taking your dating life too slow isn’t good is because if you’re not seeing each other often enough, how can you ever get to know each other and get close? How can you truly connect with someone you don’t really know because you’re not spending enough quality time together?

Why wait a week or two between dates? Why put yourselves through that kind of torture if you’re really clicking? There are no rules that say you have to wait a certain amount of time before your next date when you really like someone.

If you’re not spending enough time together to get to know each other, then you’ll never establish that crucial connection and all-important bond that you should be developing in the beginning stages of your relationship.

2. You make negative assumptions about the relationship.

When you decide to take things slow, you’re basically making negative assumptions about the relationship. Or at least that’s what your new guy thinks. If you’re not moving forward at a normal pace, then you’re apprehensive about the fate of the relationship. You don’t believe it’s going to work out for you two or you’re afraid of getting hurt by this guy.

But guess what? Love is a risk. Falling in love means taking risks, risks that are totally worth it. If you can’t bring your walls down and let yourself get close to him, then you’re already deciding the fate of your relationship – and the outlook isn’t good.

Love is a positive emotion – the most incredible emotion we can experience. Why not approach this new relationship with a positive frame of mind? Stop questioning if this relationship will fail and if you’ll get betrayed and hurt by this guy. Approach love with optimism.

3. You could be wasting your time with the wrong guy.

Why would you want to waste your precious time dating the wrong guy? You don’t – and you shouldn’t. But if you’re not approaching this relationship at the right pace, you could be wasting your time together because you’re not spending enough time with one another to realize you don’t click. If you’re not seeing each other often enough, how can you know if you’re truly compatible? How can you get to know each other and ensure your values and goals line up?

If you’re not spending adequate time together, you might go on dating because you like each other on the surface. Since you don’t spend enough time to really know each other on a deeper level, it’s going to take you much more time to figure out if this relationship is really worth moving forward.

4. Relationships can’t survive at such a slow pace.

If you’re moving along at a slow pace, that essentially means you’re not investing enough time and efforts into one another. The relationship can’t develop if you’re not fully invested.

5. You don’t experience that head over heels feeling of falling in love.

If you’re not allowing yourselves enough time together and are approaching the relationship with reservations, then you’ll never experience that head over heels feeling of falling in love. Why would you want to deprive yourself of the most amazing feeling in the world?

No matter how many times you’ve been told to take it slow with a new guy you’re seeing, we don’t recommend taking things too slowly in your dating life. Taking it too slow can be detrimental and prevent you from finding true love.
